The National Food Institute (NFI) was established under the collective concept idea of government; the Board of Investment (BOI), the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the private agencies; the Food Processing Industry Club of the Federation of Thai Industries, and the Thai Chambers of Commerce in order to find an organization in serving as a pillar in food industry development and solving problems and obstacles. The Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) conducted the study to get the needs and recommendations for establishing a new organization for the said mission. According to the result of study, it was recommended to establish a new organization in driving Thailand food industry development as an “Institute”, which is to provide services on trade and technology information, laboratory testing and analysis, coordination for problem solving, and enhance the capabilities of the food industry. This was in line with policy of the Ministry of Industry (MOI). It was, therefore, proposed to establish the National Food Institute to the cabinet. On 15 October 1996, the National Food Institute was approved though the cabinet resolution as an independent network institute under the Foundation for Industrial Development (FID), the Ministry of Industry (MOI) under the Ministerial Order NO. 440/196 dated 28 November 1996.
